A clinical trial is a medical research study that tests the efficacy of new medications, vaccines or procedures.  Clinical trials are safe and effective in finding new treatments and methods to improve health.

Clinical trials include prevention options, new treatments, new ways to use existing treatments and medications, new screening and diagnostic techniques, and options for improving the quality of life for everyone.

All clinical trials are performed according to a study protocol, or the plan for the trial. The protocol lays out what types of patients may enter the study, the schedules of tests and procedures, drugs, dosages, and length of study, as well as the outcomes that will be measured. All patients participating in the study must agree to the rules set out by the protocol and abide by them in order to remain in the study.
